The Swoop Newsletter - Round 4 2026/27

Brought to you by

With four wins this round (counting the Under 18s), and some outstanding individual efforts with bat and ball, selecting this side is indeed a hard one. Given we are in the midst of the Spring Carnival I have tried to put an equine theme to the round.
Opening the batting is Lucas Smith and Jack Di Stefano.
Smudge has progressively worked his way up through the grades with tons in the 4ths and the 3rd, and now looks ready for a Group One start, sooner rather than later. 88 off 203 shows patience and application over the longer distances such as the Cups and staying races. His partner Jack stays in the team from last week after making a real big boy ton with 157 not out off 155b. Looks like he is ready for a lift in class up to Group 2 Level.
Batting number 3 would be James Wiseman, a noted short format racer who has excellent form over 400m and games of less than 50 overs. 73 off 65b, just edges last weeks captain Tom Sheehan down to number 4 with his well compiled 91 making a bid for his second ton on the trot.
Number 5 is a bit of a dark horse and that is Shevan K, who made 65* in the Under 18s game and has backed it up with some handy contributions in the 4ths. It looks like he will be due for a rise in class soon as he looks like a long term prospect to be around in the Autumn.
Another teenager Arya Gupta posted 83 off 80 balls in his best run this campaign and looks set for a big spring carnival before Dowling time.
Kane Scott has the gloves as he was involved in 5 dismissals on Saturday and made good runs the week before.
Number 8 is a tough one, but I'm giving it to that quirky tracker (Paddy Dooley) from the north with Eagle Farm experience making 32 and taking 2/26 in anotherwise disastrous race at the Ringwood track. Number 9 is Jakey Pietz with 5/22 in the 18s. The seventh bowler from the Jackson spin stable more than did his job in restricting the Bombers to 189.
Bringing up the tail are two guys who can fight over the last two batting spots. Bobby (Robert Capstick) with 5/25 and KP (Kevin Prior) with 6/38. Both were instrumental in bringing up wins for the Camberwell Stable.
Finally 12th man is Adam Rixon. Performs well on most tracks and took 4/48 at the Rock last week .

Liepo's U18s Recap
Camberwell Magpies Under 18’s Swoop in on Bombers.
On Sunday 18th of October the young guns from both clubs flexed off against each other at the
home of the Magpies. The Bombers won the toss and taking into account the mammoth totals
made on that pitch so far this year elected to bat.
They made a flying start with 17 runs off the first over and the first ball clearing the fence, but
slowly and surely the introduction of spin changed that around. 0/77 off 17 at drinks quickly
started to slow and the next 17 overs saw only 47 more runs added for the loss of three wickets.
The Hound made the initial breakthrough before Sahil and fourth spinner Jakey Pietz bundled
out the visitors for 190. Jakey took 5/22, which Daksh 3/31 and Sahill 2/29 all took wickets.
Mitch Cliff, last year's Dowling captain went wicketless but was economical with 0/35 off his ten
overs. In the field the spinners were aided by the gloves of Jack Evans with three stumpings
and the big buckets of Ollie Schleiger who took two outfield grabs.
In reply Camberwell started in a more circumspect manner losing a wicket at 27, with 11 of
those runs coming as extras. Dhruva Bezawada made 40 in his first game since Dowling duties
two years ago and hit some delightful drives in the process. He put on a 58 run partnership with
Shevan Kohombanwickremage (now to be known as Special K) and after a couple of quick
wickets Jack Evans chipped in with 27 while batting with Special K to guide us to the verge of
victory. Special ended with 65 not out as we passed the score in the 46th over and ended on
6/190.
The boys now play Melbourne University away on Sunday 22nd of November in another one.

PRIOR REACHES GAME 250

Congratulations to Kevin Prior who plays game 250 for the club this week! 18 years is a long time and even more impressive for it to be spent at the same club. Kev started playing at the Well before some of our current players were even born - oh how time flies when you're having fun! Life member, captain, premiership player and fines master, these are just some of the titles held by Kev over the years! A respected player, a hard player, a skillful player, a talented player, you definitely do not want to misfield off his bowling but he'll be the first one to buy you a beer post game and laugh about your butter fingers! Kev can normally be found at point, gully or chewing the fat with beer in hand! What a fantastic contribution Kev has made to our club and how lucky we are to celebrate his 250th game over the next two weekends! Well done, keep turning those doorknobs and go well KP!

Welcome to Jack's Q&A Corner brought to you by Biggin Scott Boroondara! This week, I sat down with one of the clubs veterans, he bowls fast with a big ass and has become the unofficial trivia master of the magoos, that's right, it's Reuben Jamieson!
1. Congratulations on running your first road marathon a few weeks ago, how are you feeling now and would you do another one?
Reuben: I’ve been royally f***ed for 2 weeks. Starting to get back to my best now. At the moment I have no plans to run another but there are many days left in my life. I would never say never!
What an effort and you did it in exceptional time too! I had the pleasure of riding alongside Reuben in the Albert Park leg and he was making it look very easy! You should be very proud of yourself!
2. Being a recruiter and with us having a young playing list, what's one key thing you're looking for in an applicant?
Reuben: Brevity, clarity and good personal hygiene. In other words; get to the point, be clear about what you are doing and for god sake, have a shower with the boys.
I'm not sure if that last part would be included in a standard interview process but that's one way to improve team morale! Personal hygiene is very underrated, nothing worse than your deskmate stinking out the joint every day....unbearable!
3. You're a bit of a coffee connoisseur, tell us your favourite coffee spot in Melbourne?
Reuben: Riché, Maker, Dance bakes, Aunty Pegs, Heart Bakes, Baba Sus, Auction Rooms, Patricia’s, Market Lane, Industry Beans, Three Bags Full.
You can’t have a favourite with so many great places. I’ve grown to love a cafe for its cake in my later years. Coffee makes cake taste better and cake makes coffee taste better.
The reminds me, last one - Daybaker
Thats a lot of options that I'm sure the foodies in the group would appreciate! And this coffee and cake combo, I wonder if you've tried Tiramisu.....lol Although, driving after a piece of Tiramisu might put you over the legal limit hehe
4. You recently attended Tame Impala's concert, who has been your favourite artist to see live in your life so far?
Reuben: In my life is tough. Probably Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird or Kendrick Lamar
Very nice, I don't know the first band but I do know Kendrick. He likes to sing about different musical chords like A Minoooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrr..........if you know, you know! I still stand by my call to leave cricket early (and say I have a wedding....woops) to attend a Harry Styles concert, remains one of the best nights of my life!
5. If I come over for dinner, what are you cooking for me?
Reuben: I think I’d go for Birria Tacos for you with hand pressed tortillas. Who doesn’t like a sunny day, slow cooked beef birria tacos, corona with a lime or a spicy Marg
Yuuummm I do love a taco, hard or soft (¿Por qué no los dos?) but hand pressed.....oh boy I like the personal touch! Ooooft and loosening me up with a Corona too, I'm in for a South American treat! I know where I'm heading this Taco Tuesday!
Thankyou to Reuben for playing! Stay tuned to see who's next on Q&A Corner!

Welcome to Tones Trivia brought to you this week by Physioworks Health Group!
In 2015, Simon Hill and Jake Martin set the record second wicket partnership of 307 runs for the club! Who is the only player in that team still currently playing at the club?
