HARRY VINING TROPHY
The Harry Vining Trophy is awarded to the most promising Under 21 player at the club each season.
Born in Alexandra, Victoria, around the turn of the 20th century, Harry Vining grew up loving cricket and baseball.
After moving to Collingwood, he joined the Collingwood Cricket Club, becoming a popular teammate and a useful fast bowler for the second XI.
An unnamed teammate started a trophy in Harry’s name for unknown reasons. Rather than honoring elite individual success, the enduring award now focuses on encouraging young and developing talent in cricket.
Harry passed away in February 1968, leaving behind his wife (Elsie), two children (Shirley and Robert), and three grandchildren. His family believes he would be pleasantly surprised—and slightly embarrassed—that the trophy is still being awarded nearly 60 years after his death.
