The Swoop Newsletter - Round 3.5 2023/24

Proudly brought to you by McQueen Financial Group

1st XI - The 1s have a big chase on their hands this Saturday on what was a very flat McQueen Park wicket. Credit to the bowlers for putting in a very large workload, especially Bill who bowled 27 overs! An interesting days cricket awaits! 2nd XI - A tough Sat/Sun fixture for the 2s this round, losing outright on what wasn't the most challenging wicket. Some poor 1st and 2nd innings dismissals created a perfect storm for Casey to take the full 10 points. The shining light was again our bowlers, particularly Jack Lyndon who took 5 fa. 3rd XI - A very successful day of cricket was had at Watson Park with Casey being restricted to just 227 off 77 overs. It sets up a great opportunity for our batsman to go big on a nice batting wicket. Well done to Kevin for taking 4 fa on a tough bowling deck. 4th XI - Out at Ross Gregory, the 4s scrambled their way to 212 thanks to an unbeaten 93 from Sam Olsen. A brilliant knock from an up and coming star. It won't be an easy bowling day on Saturday but anything can happen with big Bobby Capstick at the helm and a little bit of Ponnamperuma magic!

Peter Warner Celebration

On Wednesday night we celebrated the wonderful Camberwell Magpies career of Peter Warner OAM. With 67 years of service, Peter is arguably the clubs greatest ever servant. He has served in almost every role the Pies have ever required, including President, where he led with passion and love for the game and our club. Peter only settled for the very best and it was reflected in the success achieved on and off the field. The scoreboard at Camberwell Sports Ground is named after Peter, a fitting tribute to a man who has served the Camberwell sporting community like no other.

The night was mc'd by our Co-President Mark Graven and included many stories from guest speakers:

* Don McQueen

* Russell Thomas & Anthony Hall

* Tim Shearer

* Ross Hepburn (Chairman of Cricket Victoria)

* Juliann Byron (Bendigo Bank Inner East Finance Chair)

Peter was also presented with the Dick Menting Award from Bendigo Bank for his lifetime of service to the community. The award included a $500 prize for Peter and $5000 to be donated to our club! A fantastic achievement for an even better man.

Peter, we thank you for everything you have done throughout your life to serve our great club and we will continue to honour your legacy as we strive for premiership glory. You have stuck with us through thick and thin, through a merger and many a struggle but your loyalty has triumphed above all. Congratulations on a wonderful career at Camberwell! You are forever a life member and legend of our club.

Thankyou to Helen Fitzpatrick for the wonderful photos below!

A big congratulations to Jobe Fraser who has been selected in the Victorian Country U17 squad. Jobe is a classy left handed top order batsman from Yarrawonga Mulwala CC who has been a part of our academy and will represent the Pies in this seasons U16 Dowling Shield. We can't wait to watch you smashing the countries bowlers all around the park!

Jobe will play in the National U17 Championships held in Ballarat from January 4-11 2024. The Magpie family is very proud of you Jobe and all the best for the tournament!

Welcome to Jack's Q&A Corner brought to you by The Cheesecake Shop Camberwell. I was joined this week by a young gun who can literally do it all, bat, bowl, field and wicket keep! That's right, it's Sam Olsen! 1. Have you put 'brooms' on your wishlist for Santa with all the sweeping you did in pre-season? Sam: I might need it! Hopefully plenty more sweeps this season! Might have to start calling you the Janitor with all the sweeping you've been up to. A genuine sweepologist if I've ever seen one! A very handy shot to have up your sleeve! 2. Is Bob secretly captain grumpy? Sam: Occasionally. But not after his straight drive for 4 on Saturday. I think he was pretty happy with that. Sounds very unlike Bob to be talking about him getting bat on ball. But nothing compared to the anchoring innings played by yourself on the weekend! A brilliant 93! And Bob does strike me as a bit of an AB, grumpy grumpy! 3. I know you're a bit of a cricket nuffy, who's your favourite domestic or international cricketer right now? Sam: Steve Smith It had to be the big smudger! I could see you doing some shadow batting on a Friday night to get in the zone pre-game. 4. Are you excited to finish year 11 and head into year 12? Sam: I'm excited to finish year 11 and have holidays. Not as excited about starting year 12. A tough but rewarding year lies ahead but holidays means more time to hit the CMCC Church of Iron, which equals more shred and is just in time for the T20 rounds meaning, we can expect some S. Olsen bombs! 5. Do you think you could beat Forrest Gump in an endurance running event (I think you could)? Sam: I think he probably has me covered. That's fair enough but one thing Forrest definitely can't do is take 5 fa in premier cricket as a 16 year old! 6. If I come over for dinner, what are you cooking for me? Sam: Chicken Pesto Pasta Very good Sammy! You might have to give Mimi's your recipe so they can add it to the menu! It seems we have a few pasta chefs at the club. Maybe we are all Italian cuisine connosieurs or, we have no idea how to make anything and putting some pasta in boiling water is a safe task that won't burn the house down :) Thankyou to Sam for playing! Who will be next on Q&A Corner? Find out in next weeks newsletter.......
