The Swoop Newsletter - Round 2 2023/24

Proudly brought to you by Bendigo Bank

First XI: In his first game as captain, Shorye Chopra won the toss at Ringwood and elected to bowl. A fast start saw the Pies have the Rams 2fa within the first 3 overs, thanks to some Will Walker brilliance. The Rams fought back until some strong bowling and fielding levelled the game heading into the break. Ringwood finishing all out for 213 off 49.5 overs. In return, Coby Edmonstone, Liam Fitzpatrick and Shorye Chopra led the way with the bat until, a Jackson Freeman hattrick in the 37th over de-railed our run chase. The game ending with the Pies falling 7 runs short with 1 wicket in hand. A valiant effort against one of the comps top sides but ultimately dropped catches and too many extras cost us victory. The Second, Third & Fourth XI were washed out due to the inclement weather last week. Bring on Round 2 against Kingston-Hawthorn and red ball cricket for all grades! Also stay tuned for information in the next week about our first social event of the season, the CMCC Table Tennis Tournament!

Congratulations to Henry Walsh, who has been selected to make his debut this week in the 1st XI. Henry has come across from New Zealand with Alex Ridley and we are super excited to watch both boys in action this week. All the best in your debut Henry and we love having you as a Pie!

Welcome to Jack's Q&A Corner, brought to you this week by Sherlock Wheelbarrows! This week, I was joined by club favourite, treasurer and fourth XI captain, Robert Capstick. Question 1 - Being a country boy from Kerang, what was it like growing up on or around a farm? Bob - Growing up in gods country was the best upbringing a person can have. Got the best of both worlds. The best of both worlds, just like Hannah Montana! And boy does Bob put on some epic performances in the 4th XI! Question 2 - How much time each morning do you spend perfecting the part in your hair? Bob - Hate to admit but a while, perfection takes time Jack hahaha but I am losing the hair so may as well enjoy it while I have it. Yes, make the most of it whilst you can otherwise you'll join the CMCC bald club, founded by N. Trapani and recently operated by A. Fekete and currently run by B. Shields! Question 3 - Now that you are treasurer and fourth XI captain, do you plan on gaining more power within the club and when do you plan on fully taking over and forcing all of us to have custom initialled number plates? Bob - I’ll leave the power dynamics to the real power brokers at the club but I’m glad you asked about the number plate. I did think a few years ago that people may think I had the number plate for my nickname, when in actual fact it is my grandads plate and car. He was also Edmund Robert Capstick but went by Bob so he wanted me to have the plates. That's a great cover story but we all know about the custom number plate clause in your fourth XI captain contract. Questions 4: Do you think Anton will ever arrive on time to a fourth XI warmup? Bob - It has been 8 seasons I think playing with him, so I’m starting to lose hope. We love you Ton but hope is dwindling...... Question 5 - What is your favourite cricketing memory at the Pies? Bob - Club championship in my first season was unbelievable and the 7fa last season was nice but I think hitting the winning run with Floods in Geelong in a close game 4 or 5 seasons ago would be the best memory. A lot of carry on from me, who made 1 not out but was a close game with the seconds watching on. Verve awarded me the Maggie mug that night for that effort which I still can’t believe, for 1 not out….. Some great memories! Watching you celebrate like a headless chook down in Geelong was pretty funny! Question 6 - If I come over for dinner to the Capstick Mansion, what are you cooking for me? Bob - Scotch fillet steak with roast potatoes and an assortment of grilled greens. Followed by an apple crumble for dessert Just ask Josh Nevett how good it is, he’s been a couple times now, I don’t miss. Can't wait for the CMCC steak off between Bob and Dave! The battle we never knew we needed! Thankyou to Bobby for playing! Who will be next on Q&A Corner? Find out in next weeks newsletter.......
