The Swoop Newsletter - Round 18.5 Edition 2023/24

FIRST XI: A post tea fightback sees the 1s well in the hunt for a final round victory. Mr Reliable Will Walker led the way and a great opening partnership will mean only 203 runs for victory.

SECOND XI: With Northcote already defeating Melbourne, the 2s are now in a must win scenario to make finals. With a big chase on our hands and likely less than 90 overs to face them, it will be an all time chase if the 2s can pull off a victory!

THIRD XI: Some unlikely run scorers in Reuben Jamieson and Lucas Harrison led the way in the 3s as they posted a respectable 281. A big bowling week awaits the 3s!

FOURTH XI: Captain Capstick lead the way as the 4s put themselves in a commanding position. With 119 for victory and 9 wickets in hand, the 4s will look to secure their spot in the finals on Saturday!

Welcome to Jack's Q&A Corner brought to you by Bendigo Bank. This week, I sat down with the Pres, the head of the Nelson clan and also the guest who got his answers back to me the slowest of anyone this year, that's right, it's Tim Nelson!

1. What do you have to say about the inverse relationship between your climb up the committee rankings at the club and the number of Nelson boys left actually playing?

Tim: Jack, I think there may be a correlation here. They have enough of me at home let alone having me preside over them at weekends! Hopefully the other two will be back next season and with me still here if the committee still want me!

The more Nelsons the better in my opinion! Although if you're cracking the gags you do on a Thursday night I don't blame them for having enough of you!

2. Were you a cricketer growing up and were you any good?

Tim: Yes, played a bit of cricket until my late teens and no, was no good. I played schoolboy cricket, a few rep carnivals, Dowling Shield  (for Northcote) and Park Cricket. An all rounder whose best skill set of the three was fielding, so I knew I had no future and stopped playing.

There's nothing you do more in cricket than field, most underrated skill! But there must have been some talent there to produce the talent in your 3 boys.

3. On your LinkedIn profile it says you attended a weeklong Harvard Business School program. Was this purely to pump up the ego so you can say you attended Harvard?

Tim: Of course, not everyone gets to say they have been to Harvard  - nothing wrong with a bit of self promotion as most of you boys would know looking at your Facebook and Insta pages !!

Yeh look I don't blame you, it's pretty cool to be able to say you went to Harvard. Speaking of business school, that is one of the better episodes of The Office, another piece of Michael Scott gold!

4. What has been the most fulfilling part of being Co-President this year?

Tim: Firstly, working closely with Gravo is a highlight, having Co Presidents/Leaders does not often work however I think we have cracked the code so far . Secondly no doubt there has been good improvement across the playing group, some memorable wins ( Frankston in the First XI) and great individual performances across all grades. We have a lot of talent at our club we just need a bit more self belief.

Yes when I think of leaders, I think of the Co-President's of the United States.......but I agree you have both done a fantastic job! Geez no surprise your favourite moment is your own sons magical run out,

5. If I come over for dinner, what are you cooking for me?

Tim: Probably not much as my wife and club sponsor ( Emma) is practically a 5-star chef so I get hunted out of the kitchen before I mess everything up. Under pressure probably best I can produce is a very high quality medium rare bbq'd scotch fillet with a green salad served with a circa 2015 Penfolds 389

I'm going to assume that's a pretty expensive wine and very safe opting for a scotch fillet. I'm sure Emma does a fabulous job with the cooking at home!

Thankyou to Tim for playing! Who will be next on Q&A Corner? Find out in next weeks newsletter.......
