WELCOME BACK!

It feels like yesterday we were celebrating season 2024/25 but here we are back already to kick off 2025/26! We've been very busy this offseason! Pre-season began in mid-July at the CitiPower Centre with batsman training on one night and bowlers/wicketkeepers on another. We then brought everyone together at the start of September to ramp up the competition and put all the skills we've been perfecting into practice.

Fielding training also took place on Saturday mornings at La Trobe in Bundoora!

Over the past two weekends we have also been lucky enough to play in numerous practice matches! The 1st XI squad travelled to South Australia to play against the SACA U19 squad. Unfortunately they didn't come away with a victory in any of the 3 matches but it was still a very valuable trip!

Back in Melbourne our 1st XI squad also came out victorious against Carlton on Grand Final Eve with a number of outstanding performances! Exciting signs for the season ahead!

The remaining players were spread across a variety of matches against Geelong at Kardinia Park, Essendon at Fairbourne Park and Carlton in Kilmore!

Ideally each player played in two practice games which will be important experience come Round 1!

And now after 10 weeks of training, it all starts this week!

We are very excited to be given the opportunity to go one better this year and bring home the Club Championship! And we can't wait to see you all supporting us too!

Stay tuned to The Swoop Newsletter each round for updates on performance, milestones, teams for the round ahead, some trivia and of course Q&A with some of our favourite people at the club!

Looking forward to another fun year of cricket! Go Pies! Jack Di Stefano

SEASON LAUNCH 2025/26

ree

Last night, we were fortunate to have 2004 Olympic mens hockey gold medallist, Travis Brooks, as a guest presenter at our season launch. Travis talked about culture, leadership and mental resilience in achieving the pinnacle in his sport!

ree

Thank you to the Honourable Member for Hawthorn, John Pesutto, and Chairman of Cricket Victoria Ross Hepburn, for speaking at the event. Go Pies!

Due to inclement weather during the week the 3rd and 4th XI fixtures against Melbourne Uni have been cancelled.

TWO 1ST XI DEBUTANTS

ree

Congratulations to caps 172 and 173 Jobe Fraser and Paddy Dooley!

Jobe has been a big part of our pathways program, the Vic underage programs, captaining the U18s this season and now graduating to the big time! Welcome to the show Jobe and go get some runs this weekend!

Paddy arrives from Tassie with a wealth of professional experience domestically and in the Big Bash! He has already made a huge impression on the club, being nominated into our leadership group and now making his debut as well!

Go well and go Pies!

NEW SPONSOR - LUMUS IMAGING

ree

We are delighted to welcome Lumus Imaging as a sponsor for the 2025/26 season! Lumus are specialists in all healthcare imaging, offering a wide range of services and bulk billing too.

So when you next need a scan, book in to either their Prahran, Richmond or Blackburn South centres!

And a big thankyou to Lumus for their support of the Pies!

Welcome back to Jacks Q&A Corner, brought to you this week by Sherlock Wheelbarrows! I thought I'd kick things off in style with the reigning Vernon Wilcox Perpetual Trophy winner, 1st XI scorer and all round country sports nuffie, Peter 'Liepo' Liepens!

1. Tell us how you got to be at the Pies.

How I got to the pies. I was looking for a change of scoring and I saw Rowlesy, who i knew from his junior and senior cricket in Mildura was appointed captain. Camberwell were also advertising for a scorer as Gracey had been unwell. Fortunately he made a recovery and I became team manager instead. The next season I stepped up to fill the void left by the great man and am still there.

So it was old SOS that got you down! Not the only person that would've been attracted to the Pies because of SOS. He did a lot of hard years but we are so grateful now for all the work he did!

2. In all your time, who's been your favourite player to watch/score?

I've enjoyed scoring many players from around the state but mostly I enjoy good spin bowling and young players developing as batsmen. At Camberwell I enjoy watching Fitzy bat, old Bill bowl and Tom Nelsons effort at everything he does. I also enjoy watching Sam Olsen bat as if I replay his innings in my mind, I sleep well.

Might have to start calling Sammy the Smooth Operator if he's putting you to sleep! But agreed who doesn't love watching Fitzy, Bill and T!

3. What is it about the club that keeps you driving a silly amount of time each year to score?

I actually enjoy driving. It's good thinking time and relax time. Also to see the improvement and potential that is emerging makes it all worthwhile. I also drive an hour each way to and from work so it's just an extra 50 minutes each way.

That's fair enough, driving can definitely be cathartic, especially doing long distance like you. I'm definitely more of a podcast or phone call man when I drive home from work but always nice to get some peace and quiet

4. What do you like to do outside of your scoring duties?

I follow the Hawks and am a teacher at Northern Bay College. I live at home with four cats and used to work in aged care.

Four cats, geez there must be some sort of reverse psychology happening there going for the Hawks! And aged care is an unforgiving industry but something we will all appreciate one day im sure!

5. If I came over for dinner, what would you cook for me?

Knowing you are dietitian Jack and even though my cooking skills are pretty good, I'd take you two doors away to the Beeac pub for a Thursday Night steak with chips and salad and mushroom gravy.

The Beeac Pub! This might be the first time someone's taken me out! Geez a Thursday night steak down at Beeac does sound delicious! I actually had a $12 steak with chips salad and gravy on my travels at the Grand Hotel in Cairns and would recommend to anyone who finds themselves up there!

And if you have any nominations or questions you want asked to someone, feel free to send us an email at admin@camberwellmagpies.com.au

Welcome to Tone's Trivia, back by popular demand for another year of brain bustling questions!

This year we are lucky to be supported again by Physioworks Health Group! They have kindly donated a massage voucher to the winner of Tones Trivia!

Last years winner Griffin McComb raved about the massage so it is worth playing every week to be in the running!

A huge thankyou to Physioworks and we can't wait to add more prizes from other sponsors throughout the year!

Round 1 Question - Which current Melbourne University player currently represents the Netherlands at International level?
